of the top people in the republican party, the people to watch, marco rubio, rand paul, ted cruz, are right out in front in opposing president obama on gun safety. so what happened? why is the gop the party of guns over people? our guests are congresswoman carolyn mccarthy, a democrat of new york, and cynthia tucker, a pulitzer prize-winning columnist. thank you both for joining us. you have been in this fight for so long, congresswoman mccarthy. i have to ask you, is there something out there in the water that's changed or are we confronting the old power of the nra? >> well, certainly we are confronting them. we'll always be able to confront them, but this time is different, and i think that the american people are realizing on how radical they actually are. you know, when you see the polls, most people in america support what we're trying to do, even nra members, so that this time is different. i think it's a combination of the gun violence that we have seen over the last couple years, but what happened in connecticut, that went over the top. we had a hearing yesterday afternoon, and i h

this for what it is. both marco rubio and rand paul are looking at 2016. so they are speaking about the president with the same kind of disrespectful receiptrhetoric t we've been hearing from the tea party darlings for quite some time. so clearly part of their motivation is looking ahead for their own political interest because there's not a lot of substance here to back up what they're saying. >> why would a united states senator from florida, rubio, question whether the president has guts? after what this president has done and the tough calls that he has had to make. i can't think of another word. is it childish? >> it is childish. particularly -- i mean, what gutsy thing has marco rubio done? let's see. he proposed some immigration reform ideas that are pretty much like the president's. so i don't think we've got an original idea out of him. i don't think we've gotten a bold idea out of him. it doesn't take a lot to go on fox news and say that the president doesn't -- i mean, come on, right? >> okay. the question to you, eugene robinson. is this all dangerous? >> well, it is dan

these republicans were trying to keep us from voting. >> now, of course marco rubio, a senator from florida took issue with it. do you see any other republicans coming out, condemning these kinds of laws like powell just talked about? >> well, listen, no one has the kind of strength of conviction that general powell does when it comes to critiquing the republican party. part of that is because he's not really in politics the way some of these folk are. but there to be a reckoning in the republican party. they have to deal with everything he has laid out here, because the demographics are the destiny for the party. unless they want to become obsolete, they have to pay attention to the issues colin powell laid out for them on "meet the press" yesterday. >> it doesn't sound like you think the republicans are going to take any of his advice. >> there is no suggestion that they will, ed. the proof will be in the pudding. either they will or they won't. but, again, a lot of folk have been talking about these things for a long time. you hope coming from a republican general as respected as general powe

. the white house said senator marco rubio's latest comments on immigration reform bode well for the possibility of cooperation. republicans have been no friend to wage earners, particularly over the past four years. to them immigration reform has the potential to put more votes in the democratic column. but if republicans ignore the issue, they risk losing even more hispanic voters and minority voters across the board. this might finally be the time for something that is long overdue. and it could be great for the american economy. the tech industry wants to reform because it would stop the brain drain of highly skilled workers putting undocumented laborers on the books is a good thing because it pumps dollars into the economy. i am joined tonight by hilda solis, secretary of labor who is leaving that position, but in my opinion has done a fabulous job. >> thank you. >> you've been a tremendous advocate across the board for not just labor, but for the environment, green jobs, women's rights. >> thank you. >> the lot. hilda, what about immigration reform and what it would mea
